Kathleen wrote this blog last week before our snowy weather of the past few days. We have a bit more snow now to cover up the crust and only ended up with about 5 inches of new snow from winter storm Juno.
Hello from Maybelle Farm on Tuesday Jan. 20,2015. It is a sunny, blue sky, beautiful day but the wind is beyond fierce! I really considered tying a rope onto the fence and the other end around my waist to keep from blowing away! For a bit I thought I was headed to Kansas! We have terrible crust in all the pastures and what snow we have is being blown away today. I do not dare let the sheep out onto the crust or they will slide through the pastures and get hurt. They seem perfectly content to stay in the barn and eat lovely second cut hay. I have 10 heater buckets going for water that have to be filled morning and night. I am back in my house, next to the soapstone stove now. I'm toasty warm with Kara, my daughter's Golden Retriever, curled up by my chair and our rescue cat, Tigger, curled up in the chair. Beautiful day to stay inside and knit but I have to go to work after lunch.
Today is my niece Cindy's birthday. I sent an e-card last night and got a nice thank you note back from her this morning. I have been working at her restaurant (Bittersweet Memories Cafe & Bakery) in Wardsboro and really enjoy it. I work with Katryna and we laugh and have a great time visiting with all the nice people that come in. I do so love to bake so Friday I made a lemon pound cake with a rum frosting and sold the whole cake. I made another one to have for the weekend. I made chocolate filled cookies, brownie wedge bars, white chocolate cranberry cheesecake bars, a raspberry pie, an apple crumb pie and I can't remember what else. My grandson Austin helped me there too. He is such a good worker, breaking down all the cardboard, shoveling the steps, filling up the soda in refrigerator, busing tables and more.
Last week I went out to the barn and did an inventory of all the fleece and came up with 70 fleeces! YIPES!! I have to take pictures of the fleece, a sample to show the staple length and a picture of the sheep. I will be listing these on our Etsy store and will hopefully selling a lot of wool. What I don't sell will go to Battenkill Fiber Mill in Greenwich, NY to be made into beautiful yarn. I have to get this all done by the end of March to clean out the barn and get ready for shearing the beginning of April. Please check the Etsy shop next week for fleeces for sale.
We have decided the lamb name letter this year will be "B" so please start sending suggestions for lamb names. My grandson wants a ram lamb named "Bob"! Here goes all the names I can think of so far: Bindi, Bertha, Becca, Burt, Bo-jangles, Bertrim, etc.. Again suggestions are welcome!
Well I have to go get busy cleaning up the kitchen and deciding what I will make for dinner. I may put some soup going in the crock pot. On a cold, windy day, soup is such a nice tasty treat.
