It's Wednesday evening Sept. 29, 2010 and I finally can sit down and write a little about the farm. On Sunday Jonathan and I went to the 2nd Annual Adirondack Fiber Festival at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Greenwich, N.Y. It was a wonderful fiber event but not very well attended. This was too bad because I thought it was one of the nicest fiber events I've been to and the fairground is a perfect spot for it. I found "This and That Farm" booth from Danby, VT with our friends Donna Herrick and Jeri Harris. I was so excited to see both Donna and Jeri! I bought my starter flock from Jeri and we were able to walk around the festival together and talk a little. I always love getting where Jeri is because we get to silly!!!
Well Monday morning Jonathan and I put two dog crates in the back of Jonathan's Vibe and loaded little "Percy", my sweet little white ram lamb, into one crate and off we went to Sandwich, N.H. to Kindred Spirit Farm. I was so excited to finally meet Donna and Ken Carlucci. We unloaded little "Percy" and he went into a little stall to calm down from his trip. Some of the sheep were poking their noses in the gate to check him out. Donna and I talked a little but we needed to load up the girls, the two Shetland ewe lambs, and head for home.
Little "Lyra" is a beautiful moorit color and the sweetest little lamb I've ever met. "Star" is a little black ewe with a white patch on the top of her head and she is a little more shy. Today they both ate grain out of my hand and I let them out of their little stall and they just follow me around the barn like little puppies..........oh my goodness! I'm over the moon happy with these two sweet little girls. Donna has such calm, wonderful, beautiful Shetlands and she should be very proud of such a nice flock. I have attached a picture of Darcy, Rowan and Declan meeting the two little lambs.
Rowan takes a Wysong dog food box into their stall and sits with them, talking to them and letting them get used to her! I really love the fact that my grandchildren can grow up at the farm where I grew up and have so many nice animals. I took care of Declan yesterday and we made oatmeal/raisin cookies. Rowan had a sleepover last night and spent the day with me. Austin arrived at 9 a.m. and stayed with me too. We went out to the barn and both Austin and Rowan helped me clean and move sheep around. All the sheep were outside today, even Arnold/Okra until the wind really spooked Arnold. They went back inside after lunch.
My friend Patty Blomgren and her apprentice Rebecca bought my roving to me that they had processed. They did one fleece of both Arnold and Okra. Its so pretty and soft. Patty also took 10 more bags of raw wool to process for me to have at our booth for the Northeast Handspinners Association event on Nov. 5-7 at Mt. Snow in West Dover, VT. Austin and Rowan helped we weigh all the cones of roving and label them.
Darcy had a inservice day today in Chester and Declan went to Little School. His treat was to go to the Weston Country Store when Darcy picked him up and he tried some pumpkin fudge! I came home at 6 p.m. and fixed dinner then up to the barn to do chores and move all the sheep back to the barn. It sounds like tomorrow is going to have some very serious rain so I will keep everyone either inside or so they can get into the barn.
I will take care of Declan tomorrow and Bev called to see if we want to come down for a visit! He loves to get down to Great Aunt Bevy's house because there are so many nice toys to play with and Fluffy (Great Uncle Francis) usually has donuts for him.
Friday I will be at the Tasha Tudor Museum from 1-4 p.m. and I really enjoy being there. My brother Alan called and asked me to play for a square dance in Dover,VT (part of the town's bicentennial celebration) this Saturday night 7-11 p.m. I am going this coming Sunday to the 22nd Annual Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival at the Tunbridge Fairground. Cheryl Flett, Alison Schantz and I are going to carpool. Cheryl and I are taking a Nuno Scarf Felting Class from 2-5 p.m. so its going to be a long day but super fun. I can't wait to take that class. Well I've got to go crawl into bed as I'm really worn out tonight.
Goodnight from Maybelle MaMa.
